About the GI-MAP: The Gastrointestinal Microbial Assay Plus (GI-MAP) is a single stool sample test. The GI-MAP is designed to detect disturbances in normal microbial balance, measuring bacterial pathogens, parasites, viruses, H. Pylori, fungi, yeast, and intestinal health markers that indicate absorption, permeability, inflammation, and immune function. Beneficial and keystone bacteria are tested as well as opportunistic and overgrowth bacteria.
About StoolOMX: StoolOMX is an additional panel included with the GI-MAP. 25 bile acids and 9 short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are measured.
Bile acids are produced in the liver and then stored in the gallbladder as bile. Bile acids aid in the absorption of dietary fats in the small intestine and then are reabsorbed and returned to the liver. Excess bile acids entering the colon instead of being reabsorbed can promote inflammation and negatively impact beneficial bacteria.
SCFAs are produced by gut bacteria during the fermentation of food in the colon. They provide energy to colon cells, strengthen the gut barrier, regulate inflammation, and are crucial for metabolic health. Low levels are linked to obesity and irritable bowel syndrome.
